Information
BioCare Acetyl Carnitine & Alpha Lipoic Acid contains Acetyl Carnitine combined with Alpha Lipoic Acid.

Acetyl Carnitine is involved in the metabolism within brain cells, enhances the activity of a chemical called acetylcholine which is involved in memory and learning, and appears to aid in the removal of cellular waste from the brain. Acetyl Carnitine is frequently utilised to improve mental functioning, particularly in the elderly and those suffering age related degenerative mental function.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is often referred to as the "universal antioxidant". It is one of the most powerful antioxidants available and is both water and fat soluble. Most nutrients are only active in either water or fat. This enables Alpha Lipoic Acid with enormous versatility in the body.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is capable of regenerating other inactive antioxidant nutrients once they have done their jobs, converting them back into their active forms. These include vitamins C & E, glutathione and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).  It also protects carotenoids (also powerful antioxidants) that are held in body tissues.
Alpha Lipoic Acid has powerful antioxidant properties in it's own right. It has been shown to combat hydroxyl radicals (the most destructive free radicals known), peroxide and hydrogen peroxide radicals (which damage fats and brain chemicals), and singlet oxygen (known to damage the lungs and skin tissue).

Alpha Lipoic Acid can chelate (bind to) heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium and thus has potential benefit in a heavy metal detoxification programme.

Alpha Lipoic Acid helps to prevent oxidative damage to LDL cholesterol. High levels of the oxidised form of LDL cholesterol may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown to inhibit a process called glycation. Glycation occurs when proteins react with excess glucose and causes damage to tissues. Glycation and free radical damage are two major factors that contribute to ageing. The capacity of Alpha Lipoic Acid to inhibit both glycation and its antioxidant properties make it a good nutrient to consider to slow the ageing process.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an essential coenzyme within the mitochondria in the energy producing (Kreb's) cycle to produce ATP. It is thus an essential part of the cycle to produce energy.
